Futurist Friday: Emotional Storytelling

My favorite futurist video this week: Karen Palmer talking about her latest artificial intelligence project. Palmer is an artist/technologist who combines film, storytelling, and neuroscience to create ’emotionally responsive cognitive film experiences.”

She created this project, RIOT, in response to the protests in Ferguson, Missouri following the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer. The film uses facial expression and emotional recognition to make the viewer an active participant in a simulated riot. When confronting a police officer, will you respond with prudence, fear, or defiance? The artificial intelligence systems respond to micro-signals of emotion, and change the storyline in response.

“My objective is for participants to shift their perspective,” Palmer explains “and rewire their brain. And it’s working.”

Hinting at a future in which museums can create emotionally responsive exhibits, perhaps.
